For the first time in what seemed like forever — miracle of miracles — the hash temperature wasn't -436C with a -572C wind chill.

After a frigid weekend that might have made people in International Falls, Minn., cry, the Hash Gods smiled for once on Calgary.

It was a little windy, sure, and co-hares Hardly and Snevil managed to set a trail that was mostly uphill into the wind. But that's a minor quibble.

It was nice enough that Dreary broke out his unusually hideous Spring Flowers Tights, and promptly won a brand-new Hash Thingy for his sartorial indiscretion.

Ah, yes, welcome to the pre-Valentine's Day Cu-Pig hash at the Pig & Whistle in south Airdrie, where bad bar service knew few bounds — although they redeemed themselves late in the game by giving the hash a free round of drinks.

The Wig & Pistle wasn't first choice. Actually, Snevil wanted to set the run at some cute little pig-themed place near Calgary Farmer's Market, which came complete with pig-shaped kegs, or some such nonsense.

But, alas, even the best-laid plans sometimes turn to crap — and prices are too high — so the Pig & Whistle it was.

In a major breakthrough, hashers gathered alongside the shopping centre for the circle without turning into human icicles, then headed off on a trail through nearby hoods. Snevil, the evil soul that she is, decided it would be fun to constantly run uphill into the wind.

When the pack finally turned downhill with the wind, Snevil said: "See, the Hash Faeries are still looking out for us."

Yes, they were. And everyone made it back to the bar, where co-hares Hardly and Snevil showed the depth of their talents and range by also serving as guest RAs. Amazing, they are.

Among the hash hi-jinks:

All in all, everybody was happy not to have turned into frozen statues for the first time in a long time.

Spring arrives when?

Duke of Hurl
