It was a dark and stormy night... actually, it wasn't stormy, but after the lovely blizzard on Saturday afternoon of the May long weekend, I wondered how the CH3 Monday night run would turn out. It was a smaller crowd of Hashers than usual who showed up at the corner of John Laurie Boulevard and Brisebois Drive N.W. in intermittent spitting rain. Evidently many more were recovering from participating in either the Red Deer half marathon or the Golden Triangle on the weekend.

The motley crew was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Hash Mattress Wet One and after the usual round of announcements, archived Hashers Zero and Hardass were introduced, the latter sporting a fashionable knee brace made of titanium. One lone new boot, Lorraine, braved the circle for the first time, having been led into the den of iniquity that is the CH3 by Specimen. Lakey distinguished herself by forgetting her name in the circle, once again demonstrating that she was eminently qualified to be a Hasher by proving herself to be the proud possessor of the only real essential a Hasher needs: half a mind.

Hares Smirk, looking even smirkier than usual, and Fuhkawee were introduced and did their song and dance, and after that the pack was off. Let it be said right off that Krusty distinguished himself on this run by running more checkbacks than I have ever seen him run before (six in a row - a new record!) to the delight of other Hashers who loudly celebrated each.

The trail led off up Nose Hill (where else?) to a checkback, then back past the parking lot where the entire pack had somehow failed to observe that the Hares had not moved from the starting point of the run. The pack then took off uphill to the east, down through a thick grove of trees before heading up again toward the smaller hill on top of the big Nose Hill. Luckily some trusting soul (not Krusty this time) ran up the hill ahead of me and found the checkback before I got there.

From there it was around (or across, for a few intrepid Hashers who were later down-downed for being the only Hashers to go through shiggy on this run) the pond on top of Nose Hill, west across a ridge, down through a ravine and back to the parking lot.

The pack then repaired to Moustache Pete's in Country Hills where down-downs were awarded thusly:

And that, dear friends, is the story of CH3 run #982, May 21, 2001. Not much else to report other than that King Shit managed to take a picture of himself instead of something interesting while on trail.

On On!
